How to prepare for the micro1 (Zara) interview

micro1 screens candidates with an AI interviewer called Zara. Most guides to it are guesswork. This one is not, because micro1 published a peer-citable research paper describing how Zara works - and that paper tells you more about how to prepare than any amount of speculation.

There is also one feature almost nobody uses: if Zara rejects you, you can ask for a written explanation. Only about one in ten candidates does.

What Zara actually is

Zara is a conversational AI recruiter. According to micro1's own interview guide, the interview is available on demand - you take it whenever you like - and includes open-ended technical questions based on the role you pick, plus scenario questions designed to evaluate "how you think, problem-solve, and communicate." Some roles add a coding challenge or a human-data exercise.

At the end you get a real-time result indicating whether you meet micro1's certification criteria, and the option to request feedback if you do not.

What the research paper reveals

micro1's paper, Zara: An LLM-based Candidate Interview Feedback System, reports real operating numbers from a three-day production window:

Two things follow from this. First, the volume tells you this is a genuine first-pass filter, not a formality - thousands of people go through it in days. Second, only 10.7% of candidates ask for feedback, which means nine in ten walk away from a free, specific explanation of why they failed.

How to prepare

Pick one core skill. micro1 explicitly tells candidates to choose a single core skill or job type to be evaluated on. Spreading yourself across three fields produces shallow answers in all of them.

Use the practice tool. micro1 offers an interview prep tool to simulate the real thing. It exists specifically so you are not meeting the format for the first time when it counts.

Prepare specifics, not topics. Zara asks open-ended questions and then follows up on your answer. A vague first answer produces a harder second question. Have real numbers, timelines and outcomes ready.

Practise thinking out loud. The scenario questions assess how you reason, not just the conclusion. Silence while you think reads as no answer.

The setup

• Quiet room and a decent microphone. You are being transcribed; noise costs you accuracy.
• Stable connection. A dropped answer reads as a non-answer.
• Your CV open beside you. The questions anchor to what you claimed.
• Do the practice run first. It is free and it does not count against you.

A note on the duration

You will see "20 to 40 minutes" repeated on aggregator sites. We could not find that figure on any micro1 page, so we are not going to state it as fact. Mercor documents its interview at around 20 minutes; micro1 does not publish a comparable number. Budget an hour of uninterrupted time and you will not be caught out.

• Request the feedback letter. It is offered, it is specific, and 89% of candidates never ask.
